![]() ![]() If you want to be tanky, focus on items with lots of elemental resistances, +life, life leech, Damage reduced by X% (applies to physical damage only, caps at 50%), Damage reduced by X, Magic damage reduced by X, and elemental absorb. Survivability at lower gear levels mostly comes from playing evasively, life leech, crowd control spells (freeze/chill/slow, blind and taunt effects, convert, knockback/hit recovery), defensive buffs (druid oak spirit, barb battle orders, assassin fade, paladin holy shield/auras), and minions tanking for you (skeletons, mercenaries, summons like valkyrie or shadow master). You can do it with melee all the way through, but it will be much slower without some crazy luck. If you want to reach high end gear asap in solo play, I'd start with some sort of caster (sorc being the best - teleport is overpowered) to accumulate wealth and gear up your melee character that way. ![]() The closest thing to a pure tank you can get would be a warcry vitality barb, but you do next to no damage and just run around AOE stunning and taunting things for your group. Playing in a party can have a big effect on your survivability, especially if you synergize your class/build choices for it (like making sure you have a druid and barb for oak and battle orders). Tanking isn't really a thing in D2 in the traditional sense of being an extremely durable wall of meat until you have very high end gear.
